The Academic Word List is necessary. It is not sufficient.
Averil Coxhead’s Academic Word List (AWL) is still the backbone of serious IELTS Academic prep. Sublists cover high-utility words such as analyse, constitute, derive, indicate and significant — the language of lectures, Task 2 essays and reading passages.
Memorising the AWL as a column of glosses rarely survives into Task 2. Examiners notice collocation, register and whether you can use significant without repeating it five times. Illustrated meaning plus an example sentence is a better first encoding than another unmarked list.

To examine something in detail in order to explain it. Picture breaking a chart into labelled parts — the visual matches Task 1 thinking.
Large or important enough to notice. IELTS writing overuses it; Wordera pairs it with synonyms such as notable, considerable, marked.
Facts that support a claim. Essential for Task 2: “There is little evidence that…” rather than “I think”.
To make up or form. Common in Reading; awkward in Speaking unless you have practised a natural sentence.
To get something from a source. Collocates: derive benefit from, derived from data.
Able to recover after difficulty. Useful beyond the AWL for Part 2 stories and opinion essays on education or work.
Daily Learn / Test / Play for IELTS
A typical day is short: learn a handful of illustrated academic words, test the ones that are due, then play a round that uses today’s list. That loop is closer to how vocabulary actually sticks than bingeing an AWL PDF the night before the exam.
